SONGS FROM THE BALCONY


Written in 1895 by Banjo Patterson, Waltzing Matilda is possibly the most famous Bush Ballad. With a smattering of Australian slang obscuring the meaning if you're not in the know so we'll give you a little dictionary.


Firstly "Waltzing" is travelling by foot.

"Matilda" is a bag which carries your belongings.

"Swagman" is an itinerant worker

"Jumbuck" sheep.

"Squatter" landowner.

"Billabong" is a watering hole.
